Why is this important?
When you purchase an Instagram account, the email address may have been changed by a previous owner. Knowing the original email is critical because Instagram uses it for account recovery. If someone tries to recover the account, Instagram sends the verification to the original email. By finding and securing this email, you ensure full ownership of the account and prevent any recovery attempts.
How to find the original email
Instagram allows you to download all your account data, which includes the original email address used when the account was first created. This information cannot be changed or hidden.
Steps:
- Log in to the Instagram account
- Go to instagram.com/download/request
- Select "Complete copy" and choose JSON format
- Enter the account's current email and click "Request download"
- Wait for Instagram to prepare the data (usually a few minutes to a few hours)
- Download the ZIP file from the link Instagram sends to your email
- Open the ZIP and look for
personal_information/personal_information.json - The original registration email will be listed there
What to do after finding the original email
- If you have access to the original email — secure it by changing its password and enabling 2FA
- If the original email is different from what you have — change the Instagram account's email to one you fully control
- After changing the email, also update the phone number and enable 2FA on the Instagram account itself
Important
Always check the original email as soon as possible after purchasing an account. The sooner you secure it, the lower the risk of losing access. This step is especially important for high-value or aged accounts.
